La Plata County Public Health

On Jan. 1, 2024, La Plata County began providing the public health services that San Juan Basin Public Health (SJBPH) has offered the community for more than 70 years. The brand-new La Plata County Public Health Department is staffed up and ready to serve La Plata County residents! Our new team of 47 employees offers the same programs and services that made SJBPH so impactful for so many decades. 

This includes:

  • Onsite wastewater permitting & installer licensing
  • Retail food licensing & inspections
  • Childcare facility inspections
  • Routine and international travel vaccinations
  • TB testing and surveillance 
  • Sexual health clinic
    • Women's Wellness Connection (WWC) for breast and cervical cancer screening
    • Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV-infection
    • Sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing and treatment
    • Pregnancy tests
    • Emergency contraception
  • Maternal Child Health programs
    • Women, Infants & Children (WIC)
    • Nurse Family Partnership (NFP)
    • SafeCare
  • Health insurance literacy
    • Education on health coverage options
    • Assistance with health insurance enrollment
    • Health insurance literacy education
  • Behavioral health programs
    • Substance use prevention, which includes opioid harm reduction 
    • Suicide prevention
  • Water and wastewater testing
  • Communicable disease surveillance and prevention
  • Birth and death certificates
