La Plata County Public Health

On Jan. 1, 2024, La Plata County began providing the public health services that San Juan Basin Public Health (SJBPH) has offered the community for more than 70 years. The brand-new La Plata County Public Health Department is staffed up and ready to serve La Plata County residents! Our new team of 47 employees offers the same programs and services that made SJBPH so impactful for so many decades.

This includes:

  • Onsite wastewater permitting & installer licensing
  • Retail food licensing & inspections
  • Childcare facility inspections
  • Sexual health & immunization clinics
  • Maternal Child Health programs
    • Women, Infants & Children (WIC)
    • Nurse Family Partnership (NFP)
    • SafeCare
    • Care coordination
  • Health insurance literacy
  • Behavioral health programs
    • Substance use prevention, which includes opioid harm reduction
    • Suicide prevention
  • Water and wastewater testing
  • Communicable disease surveillance and prevention

These programs and services will continue to be available at 281 Sawyer Drive in Durango. La Plata County Public Health kept the front desk phone number from San Juan Basin Public Health to help with continuity (970)247-5702
