Yard Waste at the Bayfield Transfer Station

Yard waste and transfer stations are open.

Free mulch loading Saturday at Bayfield Convenience Center!

La Plata County will offer free wood mulch, loaded into vehicles and trailers from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday on September 17th at the Bayfield Convenience Center, 4496 County Road 223 in Bayfield.

Please remain in your vehicle at all times and in park while loading.  The equipment operator can maneuver around your vehicle when you stop.  If you wish to cover your mulch load, there will be space to pull forward and away from other cars at the loading area.

The Bayfield Convenience Center accepts dry, brown yard waste such as tree trimmings, slash, and tree trunks. These materials are periodically mulched and offered to residents free of charge.  Traditionally, residents are required to load the mulch into their vehicles. However, on Saturday, La Plata County staff will be on site with heavy equipment to load vehicles and trailers with wood mulch.  The transfer station will be closed and not accepting waste during the free mulch-loading.

La Plata County encourages residents to take advantage of this offer to load free wood mulch. For more information or to share ideas and suggestions, please contact La Plata County’s environmental specialist, Leslie Jakoby at (970) 382-6376.

Please do not leave trash or metal at the yard waste pile. Yard Waste Only! This does not include mulch, plants such as weeds or any vegetation, decking, old boards or ash-coals of any kind. This program is for tree waste. Please stop putting trash into the yard waste pile, it is not for household trash!

La Plata County offers residents a yard waste collection site located at the Bayfield Convenience Center at 4496 CR 223 that provides local residents disposal of their dry yard waste such as tree trimmings, slash, pine needles, and tree trunks.  Please do not bring mulch, grass clippings, weeds or sagebrush. Consider combining trips by bringing your household waste and yard waste to drop off when you get your mulch. The accumulated yard waste is mulched and made available to County residents, free of charge. Residents must load their own mulch, but the County tries to offer several free mulch loading days in the spring and fall.  Sign up to receive an email notification for free mulch loading days.

TIPPING FEES INCREASE BEGINS JANUARY 1, 2020 for YARD WASTE at $8 PER LOAD.
