County Attorney

The County Attorney’s Office provides legal advice and representation to the Board of County Commissioners, county departments and other agencies.  With approval of the Board, the County Attorney’s Office also advises and represents the County’s elected officials. 

The office handles all civil matters for La Plata County, including litigation, employment issues, property tax issues, election issues, land use issues, and contracts. Additionally, the office prosecutes zoning and building code violations.

The County Attorney's Office also provides advice and representation to the Human Services Department and handles dependency and neglect cases, adult service matters and other civil matters related to the Department, including welfare fraud recovery and enforcement of child support orders.

In addition, the County Attorney's Office does provide assistance with involuntary mental health evaluations and treatment.
