Commissioner Matt Salka
Matt Salka was born in Portsmouth, VA.  A son of a military family, he moved to La Plata County in 2000. His grandfather served in the Navy during WWII, and his father served in the Navy for 25 years. Matt attended Fort Lewis College for his Information Systems degree; he started a small IT business and a second business in Pest Control. 

Matt has been involved with many  boards and commissions.  He served as Mayor, Trustee, and Planning Commission for the Town of Bayfield. He also served on the Mill Street Revitalization Committee, as Secretary of La Plata Economic Alliance, and on the Southwest Transportation Planning Region board.

As County Commissioner, Matt serves as the Board Liaison for the Sherriff’s Office, Coroner’s Office and District Attorney’s Office, as well as the County representative on the La Plata County Economic Development Alliance, Housing Solutions for the Southwest, Southwest Regional Broadband Committee and the Durango-La Plata County Airport Commission.

La Plata County Commissioners are elected at-large.  Therefore, all county residents can vote in commissioner elections and are served by all three Commissioners.  Matt comes from District 3 which encompasses eastern  La Plata County, including Bayfield, Ignacio, and Vallecito.  Commissioner terms are four years and La Plata County Commissioners are term-limited to two terms.  Matt's first term will conclude in January 2025.
