Medicare Counseling

La Plata County Senior Services offers a Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) to all county residents. Counselors trained by the Division of Insurance provide Medicare counseling sessions one or two days per month, as needed, by appointment only.

Seniors who are new to Medicare or have just moved to Durango can get their Medicare questions answered at this time or can schedule an individual appointment at a later date.   We provide assistance with Medicare fraud issues and offer annual Medicare Training to the Community.

During the Part D Open Enrollment period –October 15th - Dec. 7th seniors are encouraged to meet with a Medicare Counselor to review potential changes to their Part D Prescription Drug Coverage. Counselors are available every Monday and Friday by appointment at the Senior Center during this time period.

The Senior Center newsletters frequently contain information and updates on Medicare and Medicare fraud topics that may be of interest.  Other printed information that may be of assistance is also available here.

The Durango ~ La Plata Senior Center staff is grateful for all the help that they receive every year from individuals that train to become Medicare Counselors.  It is with their help that hundreds of seniors are assisted with their Medicare needs. For more information on becoming a Medicare counselor, please call the Senior Center director at (970) 382-6442.
