Potential Historic Sites - Not Registered

Completed in 2010, a cultural survey was conducted by the San Juan Mountains Association and Cultural Resource Planning. This project focused on the rich historical heritage of La Plata County by identifying structures and sites which contributed significantly to La Plata County. The overarching goal of the project was to promote responsible stewardship towards the preservation of historically significant landmarks; the ongoing objectives of this project are to:
  • Provide educational opportunities and a historic context to increase public appreciation and preservation of the County's unique heritage.
  • Provide data for research and for land use and preservation planning.
A Historic Resource Survey of 100 Sites in La Plata County, Colorado is available at the La Plata County Community Development Department, the Colorado Historical Society in Denver, and the Animas Museum in Durango, CO; also available upon request is the Pioneers, Prospectors and Trout; A Historical Context for La Plata County, Colorado, prepared for the La Plata County Planning Division as a part of the State Historical Fund, Project Number 2008-01-012. 
Below is a list of one hundred (100) identified historical sites in La Plata County - these sites are not necessarily on the historical register, but as of 2010 were identified as structures and sites which contributed to the historical significance of La Plata County.
