Detentions

La Plata County Detention Division Mission:

To provide for the peace and security of the community by maintaining custody of inmates legally committed until release by due process of law.

The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office operates the largest detention facility in Southwest Colorado. The new 118 bed, 7 cell block addition added in March 2009 brings the total capacity of the facility to 297. Our detention facility is operated by certified and non-certified deputies, civilian support staff, a medical staff, and kitchen staff.

The Detentions Division houses both males and females who have been arrested on misdemeanor and felony charges by all law enforcement agencies in La Plata County, including the Federal Marshals.  The inmates housed at the facility include pre-trial inmates and/or inmates sentenced to the La Plata County Jail or the Colorado Department of Corrections.

The Detentions Division partners with the community to provide the inmates with counseling, drug and alcohol therapy, educational opportunities, inmate worker programs, and Work Release.

The Detentions Facility is an important and necessary component of the criminal justice system in La Plata County.  We strive to maintain a professional environment while maintaining the highest level of security.
