Important things to remember:
- Any individual or organization may adopt a county road by completing the Adopt A County Road contact form.
- Individuals or organizations are requested to accept a minimum of two miles of road (or in the case of a road that is four miles in length or less, we ask that the organization accept the entire road). To ensure that the individual or organization is credited with accurate mileage of the adopted road, the Road and Bridge Traffic Division will verify the mileage.
- Roadside cleanup should occur at least twice a year - once in the spring and once in the fall. (Note: on heavily traveled roads, it is advisable to do one summer cleanup as well.) Signs will be posted as long as the road is maintained at least twice a year. If road side cleanup is neglected for a period of one year, the organization/participant will be dropped from the program and the signs will be removed.
- La Plata County will place two "Adopt A County Road" signs (one in each direction) on the adopted road, which will indicate the individuals or organization's name. La Plata County will provide the signs free of charge, and place them during the months of November through April, as the work and weather schedule allows.
- The cleanup coordinator is required to submit a signed and notarized Release of Liability Form for each participant for each cleanup. Participants must watch these safety videos and read the meth brochure prior to each cleanup. Please be aware these State of Colorado videos are meant for highway cleanup and their procedures. This Adopt A County Road program has a few procedures that are different. Mainly employees of the County cannot pick up the track bags, so please do not group them on the side of the County Road.
- The County will provide safety vests and orange trash bags free of charge. It is the responsibility of the individual's or organization to collect the orange trash bags and transport them to the Bondad Landfill. These specific orange bags will be taken for free. The landfill is located at 1500 CR 318, Durango 970-247-8295.
