The La Plata County Public Works Department is responsible for the maintenance of 686 miles of county roads, which includes 196 miles of paved and 490 miles of gravel roads.
The road maintenance and improvement program is funded in part by local property taxes and Highway User Tax Funds (gas tax). Most road improvement projects, including major asphalt paving, road reconstruction, and bridge replacement projects are funded in large part by State and Federal grants.
La Plata County continues to collect one of the lowest County Mill Levy Tax in Colorado, falling in the bottom 10% with a total County Mill Levy of 8.67%. The Road and Bridge Department of La Plata County receives a Mill Levy amount of 0.724%. Using the current median assessed value of a residential home in La Plata County, the typical residential property owner pays less than $25.00 dollars per year in local property taxes for County Road and Bridge services. The remainder is funded with Highway User Tax Funds and supplemental funding from the general fund.
Some of the typical services provided include winter and summer road maintenance, maintenance of drainage facilities and structures, roadside mowing, sign installation and maintenance, and annual striping of roads. The cost to pave gravel roads is approximately $250,000 per mile, however in many cases the road needs to be brought to current design standards to the extent practical with horizontal and vertical alignment corrections prior to paving and the cost can exceed $1,000,000 per mile.
