Public Hearing on King II Coal Mine Class II Land Use Permit

The La Plata County Board of Commissioners will meet at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 31 to consider a Class II Land Use Permit application for the King II Coal Mine located at 6473 County Road 120 in western La Plata County’s Hay Gulch. The mine, operated by GCC, is seeking a county permit to regulate its existing surface facilities and coal-hauling activities.

During the hearing, the Board of Commissioners will
hear presentations from GCC, Hay Gulch neighbors, and La Plata County Planning Department staff.

  • There will be two public comment periods during Tuesday’s hearing: beginning at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Following public testimony, GCC, Hay Gulch neighbors and the county’s planning staff will have an opportunity to rebut and make closing remarks prior to commissioners’ deliberations on the Land Use Permit application.
