Missionary Ridge radar imagery available online

Posted on 07/09/2019

A temporary weather radar unit has been installed on Missionary Ridge to help monitor incoming weather in La Plata County. The unit, owned by University of Oklahoma and made available to La Plata County through a partnership with the Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, detects storms and weather events below 28,000 feet – an elevation zone that frequently produces storms, but cannot be seen by the radar units in Grand Junction, Albuquerque and Flagstaff used to craft local forecasts.

This is critical information that helps local communities anticipate and prepare for storms that may cause flooding and debris flow, particularly in areas below the 416 Fire scar. The unit will be on site through September 30. Imagery from the temporary unit can be found at: https://arrc.ou.edu/px1000/. Because this is a mobile unit, the data may be subject to inconsistencies.
