Oil and Gas Development Information:

The purchase of land in Colorado often involves only the surface rights and not the underlying mineral rights.  Active natural gas development occurs in many areas of La Plata County, and, as such, a potential for conflicts between surface owners and the owners of mineral rights.

La Plata County Planning Department developed Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) sheets with input from the La Plata Count Oil and Gas Work Group to answer property owners’ commonly asked questions regarding the operation of oil and gas facilities on private lands.  The FAQ sheets are available on this website.  Please note the FAQ sheets are not intended to provide legal advice.  If you are concerned about mineral ownership, legal counsel is advised.

Questions about oil & gas issues may be directed to the La Plata County Planning Department at (970-382-6262), or the Colorado Oil & Gas Conservation Commission (970-259-1619).  There is also a toll free complaint line operated by the COGCC (888-235-1101).
