Do I need a Business License?
La Plata County does not issue traditional business licenses; however, Land Use Permits ARE required. For additional information about land use permits, call the Planning Department at (970) 382-6263.
If you will be selling goods or services to customers in La Plata County, you will need to collect the State (2.9%) and the County’s (2%) sales tax. Depending upon your location, you may also be required to collect sales taxes for the City of Durango (3%), the Town of Bayfield (2%), or the Town of Ignacio (2%).
By law, the State of Colorado collects and administers sales tax collections for the County and the Towns of Bayfield and Ignacio. You will need to register with the State at http://www.colorado.gov/cs/Satellite/Revenue/REVX/1176829212120 for a sales tax license. You will remit your sales tax collections for La Plata County and the Towns of Bayfield and Ignacio to the State and they will, in turn, send them to County or to the Towns.
The City of Durango, as a home-rule City, collects the City sales tax directly. You can get sales tax collection information from the City at http://www.durangogov.org/licensing/salestax.cfm
La Plata County also has a lodger’s tax if 1.9%. This lodger’s tax is only applicable to properties outside of the Durango City limits and must be collected by anyone who rents rooms or accommodations, including bed and breakfasts and short-term or vacation home rentals. The County’s lodgers tax is also collected and administered by the State of Colorado.
